Holding the Beach: Dune Protection Lab

Luis, Galveston, Texas

Built by ALF Studio from exactly what each teacher typed, then changed the way that teacher teaches.

What he typed · word for word

“Fourth graders test what actually holds a beach together. In stream tables they build model dunes with sand fences, dune grass, and nothing at all, hit them with waves, and measure what is left. They present a dune plan to the Park Board for a stretch of beach near the Seawall.”

Why it is here

Every Galveston kid knows the Seawall; this lets them argue with data about what protects the island next.

What a school would ask first

The beach walk needs off-campus approval, one adult to six students and no wading; a wet-floor plan for the stream tables.
