Mapping School Noise with Micro:bits

Lorna, Dundee

Built by ALF Studio from exactly what each teacher typed, then changed the way that teacher teaches.

Week 2, ready to teach

2 lessons · Built Oct 8 in 51 seconds

The week card on her unit reads: "Started from your changes to week 1: Made it local, Added a scaffold, Made it harder." Each lesson is a page for her, the task sheet is for the class, and ALF wrote the attachments the lessons hand out.

Week 2 · Lesson 1 of 2

Deploying Sound Loggers Across Zones

Checkpoint

Raw sound readings collected and logged on deployed micro:bits across three school zones, verified by completed zone deployment log sheets.

Learning intention

We are learning to create, develop and evaluate computing solutions in response to a design challenge.

I can deploy a battery-powered logging programme to sample sound systematically

I can explain how the micro:bit converts analogue sound levels into digital values

Need to know

Where are the loudest spots across our Dundee school day, and what readings do our micro:bits record there?

Sequence, 60 minutes47 of 60 minutes planned. The rest is yours.

Resources
havethe programmed sound logger micro:bit
makethe zone deployment log sheet
haveAAA battery packs with connecting leads
Watch for

Pupils unplugging battery packs too early, resetting stored data; ensure teams leave power connected until instructed.

Microphones blocked by tape or hands; verify sensors face outward into the room.

Safety

Ensure battery leads are handled gently without pulling bare wires, and position all floor cables away from walking paths.

Support and challenge

Support.Writing load: Provide simplified recording tables with colour-coded steps and vocabulary lists in home languages where the school has them, with pictures where it does not.

Challenge.Pupils calculate the total expected data points recorded based on the chosen logging interval duration and deployment time.

Next lesson

Extract the logged raw readings via serial connection to plot zone sound bar graphs.

Build one from your own idea

Type what you want to teach the way Lorna did. ALF drafts the unit, and you change whatever does not fit your class.
